Notes on the coup attempt of July 15 and its aftermath

The military coup attempt of July 15 is a crucial turning point setting a new framework for politics in Turkey. In a sense, it can be likened to Reichstag Fire in German history. Like Reichstag fire it plays a key role in suppressing the last remnants of bourgeois democracy and establishing an authoritarian regime based on state of emergency and legislative decrees. As these conditions bring forth a harder framework for the working class struggle, it is of crucial importance to have a correct understanding of the coup and its aftermath.

Authoritarianisation and the Role of Ideological Apparatuses

Marxism explained that the basic determining factor of a mode of production is, in the last analysis, the economic base. With this achievement the need and importance of studying productive forces and production relations that constitute the base in order to understand the traits of different modes of production came to light. Every single mode of production, or in other words, every single socio-economic formation, is consisted of the unity of the economic base and ideological superstructure rising above the economic base, which encompasses diverse realms such as state, politics, law, culture, religion. To grasp his unity in a correct way with diverse economic-ideological-political-social aspects it is necessary to approach the relationship between the base and superstructure in a dialectical manner.

Turkey Downed Russian Fighter Jet: War Goes Deeper

The argument based on air space violation and so-called rules of engagement is nothing but a fake and hypocritical argument to obscure the minds of the public and secure a diplomatic foothold. Just three years ago when a Turkish fighter jet was downed by Syrian air forces with the same justification Erdogan said “you can’t down a jet for just an air space violation of few seconds”. Moreover, a few months ago, a Russian jet violated the air space just the same way and the prime-minister Davutoglu announced that it was by mistake and that Russia had no intention of disrespecting the borders. And it is known that since then there have been many such minor violations occurring and all cases handled peacefully in mutual communication.

Bomb Against Peace in Ankara: The Blood You Shed Will Not Save You!

The rulers will not succeed in achieving their goals through such attacks. They will not be able to stifle the rightful struggle of the Kurdish people, which constitutes their biggest challenge at this stage. Nor will they be able to stifle the fight conducted by socialists, revolutionists and progressives who stand in solidarity with the Kurdish people. We are deeply in sorrow for our brothers and sisters who lost their lives in this vicious attack. We wish a full and speedy recovery to our wounded brothers and sisters. And we shout out loud to blood-guilty rulers of the capitalist order that our rage and determination are now further sharpened, free from the slightest trace of dismay. We are determined to prevent their plot, in which Erdoğan has the leading role, and which has turned the country into a bloodbath.

The Rights and Wrongs

No one can bring back the past on correct foundations with mistakes deleted out. But at least it is possible to draw lessons from past experiences to advance the struggle today. Proletarian struggle demands the honest revolutionary Marxist take an attitude in this direction, face their mistakes, renew themselves through drawing a revolutionary balance sheet and leap forward in order to build the new by arming themselves with the revolutionary lessons of historical experiences. It should be kept in mind that in the present world where objective conditions are fully ripe for the world working class to overthrow capitalism the task of creating the revolutionary leadership of the proletariat is as much important. To cope with this task and move on, the hindrance that has been posed by the past years’ worldwide negative legacy on organisational area must be overcome. These are the fundamental pillars of how internationalist communists, who do not lose their historical optimism and, when necessary, dare to swim against the current, understand duties of the day both on a national and international level.

Capitalism Advances on the Basis of Industrial Cycles

As is known, capitalism is based on generalised commodity production. The fundamental feature of capitalist mode of production lies in the fact that the outcome of the production process is not only the value but also the surplus value. Nevertheless, for a well-functioning economy, producing more surplus value is not enough. It must be realised in the market as well.

HDP Tears Down the Election Barrier, Erdoğan under the Rubble

HDP passed the barrier with a very clear margin as if a strong pole vaulter passes the bar with ease. A 13% rate and 6 million votes is at the same time a severe blow inflicted upon the “terror” demagogy. This is an important victory and it is contributed by socialists, progressives, democrats, freedom lovers as well. On this occasion we, as working-class revolutionaries, share the happiness of the HDP to which we provided our support and the success of which we have worked for.

Crises of Capitalism and Revolutionary Situation

kapitalizmin-krizleri-2.bsk-kapak-en.png

Despite all its ups and downs, capitalist system displayed a general economic dynamism during the period between the end of the Second World War and the beginning of the 21st century. Following deep crises and the two big world wars which had cost lives of millions, this period of dynamism gave rise to a popularisation of the idea that “capitalist production process has changed its character to a great extent.” Economists proudly announced, with their chests puffed out, that capitalist system had reached enough maturity to overcome crises and entered a new epoch leaving behind all characteristics of the old one. In such a period of economic boom, there was nothing strange in those bourgeois economists who made ideological assertions to fortify capitalist system and preached that capitalism entered the age of immortality. What was strange, however, was the fact that those would-be Marxists of the past were falling under the influence of this propaganda as if trailing behind bourgeois economists. It is still fresh in one’s mind that in the aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet Union, a lot of writers who had previously carried the label of “Marxist” shifted largely towards liberalism. A kind of apostasy, polished with a self-styled scientific veneer, became fashionable. This bombardment of propaganda created such an intellectual climate that many socialist circles, falling under the influence of this climate, tended to find Marx’s analysis in Capital inadequate. Attempting to “deepen” the “shallow” conclusions of Marxism regarding the laws of capitalist production, those curious “economic analysts” were, in fact, far from grasping even the slightest bit of the rich ideas contained in the lines written by Marx. Some even had no intention whatsoever of grasping them. However, despite all the advertising campaigns hailing the globalising capitalism and all the trends of “new thinking” made fashionable by the bourgeois media to praise capitalism, economic mechanisms of “modern” capitalism, which allegedly acquired immunity to crises, have started to be shaken by a deep crisis. Recent years have witnessed various wrong approaches regarding the crises of capitalism. For instance, while the economy was expanding at a considerable rate, some were constantly touting a crisis in the name of revolutionism. Or, contrarily, some others were proclaiming that capitalist economy was still on the rise, whereas a great economic collapse was imminent. Yet, the concrete reality is not an inextricable secret, although it involves many complicated aspects. Besides, as seen in the case of economic crisis, confining oneself to mere exposing the biting facts, which are felt by the working masses on a daily basis, has nothing to do with revolutionism and Marxist attitude. It is not at all correct to attach too much importance to figure-rich economic conjuncture analyses, as done by bourgeois economists, and to turn this attitude into an almost unidimensional tendency in the name of Marxist analysis. Guiding the revolutionary struggle of the working class, Marxism, in any given economic situation, calls for conducting the preparation for such a struggle that will throw the capitalist system into the dustbin of history, rather than pedantry about crises. No doubt, the ideological and theoretical struggle required by this duty is an undeniable fundamental one, which must be handled and conducted in a thorough and extensive way befitting Marxism. However, when it comes to the analysis of the economy-related subjects, the method of a communist is, and certainly has to be, completely different from that of academics. It is far from being an agreeable attitude to neglect primary issues and bury oneself in the details of questions such as when would capitalism overcome the crisis or when would the next crisis occur, apparently being carried away by the ambition of contesting with bourgeois economists. In conclusion, the efforts made for the purpose of grasping the economic crises of capitalism and their outcomes must be grounded on a Marxist basis and a relentless struggle must be waged against erroneous tendencies in such subjects.

Revolutionary Marxism: Organised Unity of Theory and Practice

The tendency to fabricate theories, which has nothing to do with revolutionary Marxism, can be characterised as a passion for theoricism that is alien to revolutionary struggle of the working class. The theories produced by some writers, who owe their fame to “Marxist” studies in academic circles, can generally be counted within this framework. As the theory remains unchecked, disconnected from the light and discipline of revolutionary class struggle, it becomes nothing more than confusing variations.

Democracy and Plutocracy

The struggle to be waged by the working class and the toiling masses for their democratic rights in capitalist society is of crucial importance and cannot be neglected. But beyond this minimum goal of struggle, those who want the emancipation of humanity and a real democracy in today’s world, must desire and fight for the revolution that will overthrow capitalism. Nothing but the rule of the revolutionary working class and the workers’ democracy can lead workers and toilers to a prosperous and happy future!
